Prestigious London development provides successful test for Norcros Adhesives

Sugar Quay is a new residential site, currently under development. It is situated in one of the most prestigious riverside locations still to be developed in London on the north bank of the River Thames near to the Tower of London.

The core of the project is the replacement of a 1970s office block with a contemporary mixed-use Foster & Partners scheme. This will comprise apartments built at basement level, at ground floor level and also in blocks of nine to eleven storeys. There will be 165 private residential apartments, as well as studios and one, two, and three-bedroom apartments. Sugar Quay is being jointly developed by Barratt London and CPC Group Limited.

Because of the scale of the project, anhydrite screeds were used to offer the following benefits:

  • Easily pumpable – up to 2,000sq m can be laid in a single day compared to 100 – 150sq m achieved with conventional sand: cement screed.
  • More cost-effective than traditional screeds. For example on ground floor installations, anhydrite screeds are an average of £2 to £5/sq m cheaper to lay.
  • Minimal shrinkage
  • Improved encapsulation of underfloor heating pipes
  • Significantly thinner than sand: cement screeds.
  • More environmentally friendly.

Norcros Adhesives carried out a programme of on-site tests, using the new Norcros Pro Gyp-Base Fast Track Sealer, which greatly reduces the minimum drying times normally applicable for anhydrite screeds. Developed and tested in association with Gypsol, Norcros Pro Gyp Base offers a fast track solution for tiling on to both heated and unheated anhydrite screeds.

Norcros conducted product trials in a 30sq m ground floor area of the building, on a newly laid 50mm thick anhydrite screed incorporating underfloor heating pipes. Full reports from the testing carried out by Norcros Adhesives were issued on 1 September 2017.

The advantage of the Norcros system is that it enables tiles to be fixed with a cement-based adhesive on to anhydrite screeds which have a relative humidity as high as 95 per cent instead of the standard requirement of 75%. The Pro Gyp-Base system negates the requirement to commission the heating prior to tiling. Therefore in the site trial carried out at Sugar Quay, the underfloor heating was not commissioned prior to application of the Norcros Pro Gyp Base system or before tiling.

At the conclusion of the tests there was no evidence of debonding of tiles or cracking of the grout joints in any of the bays and no evidence that the Pro Gyp Base had not worked effectively.

The results from trials, combined with the available historic information provide very positive evidence to support the use of the Norcros Pro Gyp Base system as a fast track solution for rigid tiling on to anhydrite screeds, offering potential for both considerable time and cost savings.

Norcros Adhesives were able to provide full on-site support and technical back-up. This includes on-site training, as well as a full programme of checking and monitoring throughout the installation process which will continue through to occupation of the building. These stages will be supported by Quality Control Inspection and Test Plans, Quality Control Check Sheets and full written procedures.

Norcros Adhesives is three times an environmental winner!

Norcros Adhesives, the tile adhesive, grout and preparation products manufacturer, has just a won the Gold Award for Best Environmental Initiative at the recent Tile Association Awards. This achievement is impressive enough in its own right, but is even more so, since this is now the third year in a row that the company has won this prestigious accolade.

The Award is in recognition of the many measures the company has put in place over recent years to improve the environmental management of its operations. This includes the way it runs its business, as well as the environmental impact of its individual products.

The company’s work on environmental improvement goes back to the time of its founding. Since the earliest days it has been the intention to eliminate waste going to landfill. This zero target was achieved during 2015, a major achievement for a large scale manufacturing business.

It has launched a wave of environmentally friendly products in recent years, including Norcros Pro 30 Fast Track Eco Levelling Compound, which contains recycled crushed glass, rather than quarried sand and Norcros Pro Ply, an eco-friendly Tile Backer Board which is manufactured from mineral-based magnesium oxide, meaning that very little CO2 is emitted during its manufacture.

The company is also a Gold member of the Supply Chain Sustainability School. This is a construction industry initiative designed to promote sustainability in construction supply chains. It provides free practical support in the form of e-learning modules, tailored self-assessment and action plans, sustainability training and networking.

The Awards night was organised by The Tile Association, which represents the whole tiling industry. Norcros Adhesives managing director, Richard Wallis, and key members of his team attended the event to collect their Award in front of an audience drawn from virtually every major company in the tiling industry.

“As a local business, we are very proud to have won this major accolade from our industry three times in succession,” says Richard Wallis. “Improving our environmental performance has been key to the company since its founding and is important to all our colleagues here, so I’m delighted for them that we now have this unique track record of success. I am sure this will also spur us on to maintain and further improve the high standards which we now set ourselves in terms of environmental improvement.”

Norcros Pro-Gyp Base Fast Track Sealer enables faster, simpler tiling on to anhydrite screeds

Norcros Adhesives, manufacturer of tiling adhesives, grouts and surface preparation products, speeds up tiling on to green screeds with its latest system solution.

Pro Gyp-Base Fast Track Sealer greatly reduces the minimum drying times normally applicable for anhydrite (calcium sulfate) screeds. The new product comprises a three-stage preparation system for fixing ceramic and porcelain tiles on to screeded surfaces. It is sold as a kit containing all the elements necessary to achieve a successful bond, including a primer, moisture suppressant and gritted primer.

Used together, the system allows for fast track tile installation without detracting from the overall screed strength. It also avoids the need for a special tile to gypsum adhesive, which is normally required for tiling on to anhydrite screeds to prevent the tiles from debonding.

Pro Gyp-Base Fast Track Sealer can be used on either heated or unheated anhydrite screeds. A 15kg kit contains everything required to prepare and seal approximately a 25sq m area. In an ambient temperature of 20oC, drying times are down to two hours for the first primer coat and 24 hours for the second primer coat. The moisture suppressant and gritted primer require a total of three hours drying time before tiling commences. Screeds need to be a minimum of seven days old and have a maximum relative humidity of 95 per cent.

After drying, tiles may be fixed with the new Norcros Pro Gyp-Base Adhesive. This is a white cement-based, flexible, fibre-reinforced, thin bed cementitious adhesive specially formulated for fixing fully vitrified porcelain, ceramic and stone tiles to Norcros Pro Gyp-Base Fast Track Anhydrite Screed Sealer. It has a setting time of three hours at 20oC permitting early trafficking of the tiled installation. The adhesive has excellent thermal ageing properties making it suitable for use on heated floors. It is sold in a 20kg pack.

“This new system from Norcros Adhesives is designed to tackle one of the key issues associated with the increasingly popular anhydrite screeds, namely extended drying times, which can be up to 80 days for a 60mm screed,” says Mandy Searle, technical services at Norcros Adhesives. “This new system solution from Norcros Adhesives should prove a real benefit on-site for flooring contractors and tile fixers.”

Norcros Adhesives Relaunches 4 into 1 Grout Range with New Formulations and Colours

Norcros Adhesives is relaunching its successful 4 into 1 grout range with new improved formulations, new colours, new packaging and marketing support. The Norcros 4 into 1 Grouts & Sealants range has established itself in recent years as one of the leading ranges on the market, known for technical excellence and ease of use, so the relaunch will be of considerable interest both to fixers and distributors.

The new range has been considerably expanded and now includes a total of 15 colours. The products have been reformulated to be efflorescence-resistant and water-repellant. Efflorescence is the movement of salts within a porous material, including tiles and grout, to the surface of the material where it can leave an unsightly deposit. In some tiling installations it can be a real problem which negatively affects the aesthetic appearance of a tiled surface.

The formulation also contains Norcros Stop Mould Antibacterial additives to protect against mould and discolouration, which can occur when wet areas are grouted. This also means that the grouts can be used either internally or externally and in permanently immersed locations such as swimming pools. They are suitable for use with all types of wall and floor tiles, including natural stone, especially where a narrow fine-textured joint is required. Containing reinforcing polymers, the new grouts have a high flexural strength, meaning they are suitable for use in areas where movement of the substrate or vibration can occur, such as in heated floors or where tiling has been applied to wooden flooring.

One of the biggest tile trends of recent years has been the escalating popularity of wood effect tiles. Norcros Adhesives has therefore created four new colours in the 4 into 1 grouts range which are specifically designed to complement this new generation of modern tiles. Autumn Chestnut, Forest Acorn, Tropical Ebony and Rustic Cedar are the new colours joining the range. The remaining colours which formed part of the previous range have all been reformulated, repackaged and mostly renamed. The new names are Arctic White, Oxford Stone, Golden Jasmine, Cornish Cream, Blanched Almond, Sandy Beach, Silver Grey, Steel Grey, Slate Grey, Midnight Coal and Coffee Bean.

“In launching this exciting new range, we have sought to address two key issues,” says Mandy Searle, technical services manager at Norcros Adhesives. “Firstly the issue of efflorescence, which can be an unsightly problem for fixers, for which we believe we have provided a solution by implementing a technical enhancement of the product. Secondly we have addressed the need to match our grouts to the latest fashion trends in the tiling market, and our new colours for wood effect tiles are our response to that.”

The new 4 into 1 grouts are available in 5kg or 10kg bags and are covered by the usual Norcros lifetime guarantee.

Norcros Adhesives wins TTA Best Environmental Initiative – for the second year running!

Norcros Adhesives has just cemented its reputation as the leading environmental manufacturer in our industry. It has for the second year running won the TTA Award for Best Environmental Initiative.

This comes following a year in which the company has broadened its efforts to eliminate negative environmental impacts of its business. During 2016 the company launched its eco-friendly Norcros Pro Ply Tile Backer Board. The key environmental benefit of this product is that very little CO2 is emitted during its manufacture. It also does not contain crystalline silica, and so is better for the installer. It is asbestos-free and, containing no cellulose, is resistant to mould growth.

Norcros Adhesives has also joined the Supply Chain Sustainability School and very quickly attained Silver status within the School, indicating a high level of engagement with its activities. The Supply Chain Sustainability School is a programme designed to promote sustainability in construction supply chains. It has more than 14,000 members and it provides free practical support in the form of e-learning modules, tailored self-assessment and action plans, sustainability training and networking. Its creation has been part of The UK Construction Strategy 2025, which sets out clear ambitions for the construction industry – including the emission of 50% less CO2.

These initiatives follow work on environmental improvement goes back to the time of the founding of Norcros Adhesives. Since the company’s earliest days it has been the intention to eliminate waste going to landfill. This zero target was achieved during 2015, the same year in which the company achieved the environmental standard ISO14001 for its work to reduce waste and improve resource efficiency.

Norcros Adhesives has invested large sums of capital in modern, fully-automated manufacturing and packaging plant. This investment has enabled the development of lean manufacturing techniques for the high volume production of polymer modified powder adhesives, grouts and screeds, together with professional, high performance dispersion adhesives.

“The whole team at Norcros Adhesives is delighted that we have won this Award,” says Richard Wallis, managing director of Norcros Adhesives. “This is a lot more than recognition of a boardroom policy. This is recognition of the way we run our business and the work that everybody in the company is now putting into maintaining environmental excellence on a continuing basis. We have a number of new environmental initiatives planned for the future, and the Award provides a very welcome boost for the whole team.”
