Employee Spotlight – Kyle Smallwood
Kyle is our Waste Stream Operative here at Norcros Adhesives. Welcome to his Employee Spotlight.
How long have you been with Norcros Adhesives ?
Nearly 3 years.
Can you tell us about your role at Norcros Adhesives and how you came to work with us?
My main role is to research into recycling our waste streams and help to make things easier for production by keeping on top waste throughout the factory inside and out. This takes many forms, for example organizing skips, waste collections and site visits with relevant industry representatives. I was originally the warehouse cleaner after leaving a position in mental health care, and have since progressed within the business.
What does a typical day look like for you?
It’s usually a bit manic from start to finish, and I often have several mini break downs a day(!) but I love my job, and its great that you can see the effort put in by production to implement the changes made. Everyday is different and so much can be learnt.
How have you been able to learn and grow at Norcros Adhesives?
I started at the bottom, and by putting in the maximum effort I have seen big growth in myself and my career over the last 3 years. I made sure to learn everything there is to know about one machine on the shop floor, and then move onto another. Plus, a little of David Bowie’s music makes you move quicker! In production teamwork is absolute key, we have a brilliant team on the floor, so I just made sure I absorbed their knowledge and helped them where I could.
What do you enjoy most about working at Norcros Adhesives?
To be honest I don’t really know, but I don’t want to work anywhere else! I’ve been able to grow and gain and it helps that there are some really great people who are like minded. A bad day doesn’t last too long, and I have a good manager.
What tips would you give to someone looking to start their career within ops?
Talk to everyone! No one is below! Don’t get too big for your boots because you’ll fall on your bum. Teamwork and patience, look beyond the dust and involve yourself and ask for help from people.
What advice would you give to your younger self about your career?
Shouldn’t have piled those Covid pounds on, because your trousers don’t fit and now you’re using your body more! But seriously, don’t moan as much and don’t panic, just stick Bowie on and get on with it. Everything works out and there’s great support available.
How do you feel you make the most impact in your role at Norcros?
You’ll have to ask someone else, my head is big enough! I don’t think I make an impact yet in this role but I know I will.
What’s your favourite activity to do in your spare time?
Looking after my niece and going out with my partner on adventures.
What’s the last song you listened to?
“Limbo” by Bryan Ferry! Amazing song! BUT I was just driving through the warehouse whilst Bowie’s Ashes to Ashes was on. I only ever listen to Bowie and Ferry/Roxy Music.
