Employee Spotlight – Mandy Searle
Mandy Searle is our Head of Technical here at Norcros Adhesives. She has been with the company since its inception in 2004. Welcome to her Employee Spotlight.
Can you tell us about your role at Norcros Adhesives and how it’s changed since you started?
I look after several departments within the company – Technical, Order Processing, Q.C & Development and now our in-house Marketing Team. I have been with the company from day 1. It was so different then as we only had a small team and it was essential to be able to put your hand to anything. I was writing technical and safety data sheets and packaging, answering phones, processing orders, and many other things! Now Norcros has a full team of people who perform these tasks, leaving me to manage my own departments.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Managing several departments means that no day is the same. I begin work between 7:00 and 7:30 AM which allows me to check my emails and plan my day before the office opens. I like to meet up with my teams to discuss the day ahead and any important issues that need to be dealt with. The rest of the day is spent on general tasks, for example writing reports, attending meetings, discussing product development, or technical matters. I try to spend time with my staff to catch up on their news and issues they may have. As with most roles, you have to be able to think on your feet and resolve any issues that may arise as efficiently as possible. Fortunately, I have a wonderful team who work well together and are invaluable to the success of the business.
How have you been able to learn and grow at Norcros Adhesives?
I have been very lucky in that I have worked with some very knowledgeable people. Being involved from the beginning of a new company means that you are constantly having to learn new skills which you may otherwise have not needed. You are always learning something new in this industry and it is essential that you keep up to date with new technology and are open to taking advice and accepting change. The help, support, and encouragement of my fellow managers and my colleagues have been key to my development.
What has been your proudest moment at Norcros Adhesives?
That’s a difficult one to answer as there have been so many. Winning our first industry-recognized award was a great achievement.
Norcros Adhesives winning the Gold Award for Best Environmental Initiative at the TTA Awards
How do you anticipate the effects of Covid 19 on our industry in 2021?
No one knows what the ‘new normal’ will be and the industry is still adjusting to the impact of Brexit. Recovery may be slow, as people begin to spend money on holidays vs home improvement. The reported slowdown in recent planning approvals will have an impact on future construction projects. I am however an optimist and believe that as long as we learn to adapt the industry will grow. The Government forecast that the construction industry will grow by around 8% during 2021 with a continued growth of around 2.5% moving forward.
Once restrictions are fully lifted which destination do you wish to travel to first?
Blackpool! My son, who I haven’t been able to see since Christmas 2019 due to COVID, is returning from Fuerteventura back to Blackpool. I’m really excited to see him again as I’ve missed him more than words can say.
What’s your favourite activity in your spare time?
I like reading and going out and about with my best friend but COVID has put a stop to our excursions for the time being. I enjoy swimming which I am looking forward to starting again as soon as it is allowed. I love spending time with Diesel, my English Bull Terrier, and enjoy pottering around in my garden.
What book are you reading currently?
Dry Rot and Daffodils by Mary Mackie. It’s an amusing account of what it’s like to live and work in a National Trust house.
What’s the last song you listened to?
High Hopes by Pink Floyd. I’m a huge fan and as far as I’m concerned, David Gilmour is an absolute legend.
